While working on set on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in 1976, famed photographer Mary Ellen Mark (working with writer Karen Folger Jacobs) first encountered and documented the lives of the women in the Oregon State Hospital in Salem — the only locked psychiatric ward in the state — and created a groundbreaking book called Ward 81 that was released in 1979.
Now, 44 years since its publication, the late photographer’s book is being celebrated with an expanded edition, a special exhibit at The Image Centre in Toronto, and a new documentary called Ward 81 Voices directed by Mark’s husband and long-time collaborator, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Martin Bell.
The film uses audio recordings, archival materials and Mark’s extraordinary photographs to offer a remarkable snapshot of her creative process in action and the humanistic approach and long-term commitment to her subjects that have made Mark’s images landmarks in the field of documentary photography.

In 2017, Nic D’Avirro approached Matt Braaten, his good friend and fellow actor, with an idea for a play about the American playwright Sam Shepard. Nic was an actor first and foremost, whereas Matt had previously written plays and scripts. It was a fruitful partnership and it developed into a close collaboration, as each of them brought their creativity to the table. At first, there was just an idea about Sam Shepard on his last night alive, but Nic clearly knew the tone of the piece yet to be written. Energized by the concept, the two began sharing ideas, checking out books, buying plays and learning as much about the reclusive Shepard as they could. Nic and Matt read Shepard's plays, books and biographies, discovered old interviews online and researched anything they could find on him. Slowly the structure of the play began to take shape.
Over the course of several years, they wrote the play together, now titled Unseen Shepard, and made plans to take it to the 2020 Edinburgh (Scotland) Festival Fringe, the biggest theatre festival of its kind in the world. But when Covid struck, the Festival was cancelled. Undeterred, Nic and Matt regrouped and began planning to take the show to the 2021 Festival. However, Nic died unexpectedly on January 12, 2021.
After taking time to mourn the loss of their dear friend, father, husband and collaborator, Matt and Nic’s family have decided to follow through on the plan and bring the play to the 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe where it has been invited to premiere. But they need some help getting there. Please read the details in the link and support the project if you are in a position to do so. Thank you.
BLT Helps designed the window card for the production.

When diagnosed with terminal cancer, a world-renowned trumpet player uses music to give hope, proving art is essential to survival. BLT Helps was honord to design the poster for the film Song for Hope.
Song for Hope follows the remarkable story of Ryan Anthony, a renowned trumpet virtuoso who, when diagnosed with terminal cancer, started a charity called “CancerBlows” and raised millions for cancer research by putting on huge concerts with some of the biggest instrumental music stars in the world. During his treatment, he also climbed Mt. Fuji with his oncologist and played his trumpet at the summit.
This is a story about hope, about living life to the fullest, about the unwavering strength and support of family and friends, and about one man’s refusal to allow his affliction to affect his love of his art. Prepare to be inspired.

BLT Helps was honored to assist Arjuna O'Neal from Share Necessities on updating the signage outside the Next Level CommUNITY Center. They recently underwent a shift in ownership for the project and wanted a new name and fresh look to reflect that.
When asked about the change, Arjuna gave us a bit of backstory:
“Before opening our commUNITY center in the heart of South Central, LA, Share Necessities did some extensive research regarding the services we wanted to offer the local community residents and youth. We learned that the location was surrounded by 5 public schools with very minimal to know resources that supported the youth’s academic endeavors. We also learned that it’s very common for organizations specifically nonprofits to open facilities in under-served but leave shortly after due to financial challenges. Their departure only left a bad taste in the mouths of the community, which created distrust and abandonment concerns. Share Necessities focused on educating and orienting locals with the professional skills and tools in addition to providing everyday living essentials. Our approach allowed us to create leaders and change agents within the community that would eventually be able to carry out the vision Share Necessities initially had. We understood this would be a strategy that would not only empower the community at its core but leave opportunities and exampleship for the youth to eventually follow and participate in as well.
Based on our approach mentioned above, we partnered with local leaders that were already working to raise the vibration in the commUNITY. I used my business background to help the group of leaders create their own nonprofit called The F.O.C.U.S Is On You, which provides similar services but now it’s actual residents of the community. This has gained the ultimate trust and increased the hope for those who initially didn’t believe they had a purpose or a way out. Now seeing their community residents operating the center, Share Necessities has given the entire commUNITY a second chance and a new value system to operate from. We’ve abolished the abandonment narrative for so many and that’s priceless!” – Arjuna O’Neal
Share Necessities is still collecting funds for the center and their current mission is to open a pop-up school (K-5 tent) at the local recreation center two blocks away. They plan to partner with a few organizations to provide healthy lunches, school supplies, and reading books, as well as volunteer teachings and facilitators.
If you would like to help, please check out their website to donate and learn more about F.O.C.U.S and other Share Necessities projects!

Union stagehands in Philadelphia introduced a design that uses live event technology to help convert venues into viable Covid-19 treatment facilities. The design repurposes theatrical trussing to bring lifesaving infrastructure like lighting, power, and oxygen directly to the beds in temporary hospitals like the one in the Liacouras Center.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and Black History Month, composer and jazz pianist Jason Moran returns to The Soraya to perform his Oscar-nominated score, accompanying Ava DuVernay’s 2014 film, Selma, on the large screen. Moran (Artistic Director for jazz at The Kennedy Center) will be joined by New West Symphony.
Selma dramatizes the events leading up to King’s landmark 1965 march for voting rights. About Moran’s astonishing first feature film score, Film Music Magazine noted, “It’s an unstoppable sense of history-making that could perhaps only be captured by a musician so steeped in jazz and its cultural heritage.”
Selma earned Golden Globe nominations for Best Film, Director, Actor, and Song for “Glory” (by John Legend and Common, who also appeared in the film). “Glory” also earned the Oscar for Best Original Song.
This year marks the 55th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Marches, March 7–25, 1965.

Still looking for a Christmas tree? Let us recommend Delancey Street Foundation!
This amazing nonprofit provides residential rehabilitation services and vocational training for substance abusers and convicted criminals.
For over 45 years, they’ve empowered thousands of residents to become their own solution, addressing generations of poverty, illiteracy, lack of job skills, hard core substance abuse, homelessness, crime, violence, teen pregnancy, and emotional and physical abuse. After an average of four years (a minimum stay of two years), residents gain an academic education, three marketable skills, accountability and responsibility, dignity, decency, and integrity.
In addition to residential programs all over the country, Delancey does fundraising through their annual Christmas tree lots! This also provides important vocational training in the basics of sales, particularly for new residents. Holiday buyers can also purchase mistletoe, indoor tree lights, decorated wreaths, living potted pines, tree removal bags, and water bowls for trees. Los Angeles locations include Echo Park, Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Manhattan Beach.

To counter racist socialization and racial bias, experts recommend acknowledging and naming race and racism with children as early and as often as possible. Children’s books are one of the most effective and practical tools for initiating these critical conversations, and can also be used to model what it means to resist and dismantle oppression.
Beyond addressing issues of race and racism, this children’s reading list focuses on taking action.
